Energy efficiency and renewables make the strategy 20 20 20 target even closer

The Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale has recently published the national greenhouse gas inventory data for the year 2016. The data emerging from the report are truly encouraging: compared to 1990, emissions in Italy have fallen by 17.5%, a result that is entirely in line with the Kyoto Protocol and the Strategy 20 20 20 devised by the European Union. Protagonists of this great improvement are the production of energy from renewable sources and the increase of energy efficiency programs.

The reduction of greenhouse gases in recent years is due not only to the decline in industrial production but is especially linked to the increase in the use of renewable sources for energy production, especially wind and hydroelectric.

Positive results have also been obtained in terms of carbon dioxide emissions. Between 1990 and 2016, CO2 released into the environment fell from 518 million tonnes to 428 million tonnes, a reduction of more than 20%. The quantities of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) released into the environment have also decreased in the last twenty-six years.

Not all sectors have contributed in the same way to the achievement of the 20 20 20 Programme. The companies that have reduced their CO2 emissions the most work in the fields of energy (-23.9%), construction and manufacturing (-48.8%).

The data recorded in 2016 and confirmed also in 2017 are even more encouraging if we consider that the reduction in emissions was accompanied by an increase in GDP of about 1.5%. The correlation between economic growth and the increase in greenhouse gas emissions is therefore no longer present.

The trend established in the past two years seems to have been confirmed also in the first quarter of 2018, which makes it extremely feasible not only to achieve the objectives set in Europe for 2020 but also to cut emissions by 40% compared to 1990 formulated for 2030
